Foreign English teachers can find work in public schools, language and International schools and in English language summer camps in Italy. The job market for English teachers in Italy is very competitive, so some teaching experience could be advantageous in addition your TEFL certificate and a BA degree. The latter, although not always essential, is often required in Italy, and always for the issue of a work visa. No visas or work permits are required for native-English EU passport holders. Schools in Italy do not commonly include benefits in their teaching packages. You would normally need to pay for your own flights and accommodation.  Pay is fair but considering the cost of living, you will have to be diligent to save anything significant for travelling, or supplement your income with well-paid private tutoring in the more expensive North. Nevertheless, teaching English in Italy is a great way to ‘live’ the unique Italian culture and learn to speak Italian. The cost of living is much reduced in Southern Italy, but salaries may also less.

Teaching English at Private Language Schools

An abundance of language schools can be found across Italy.  The majority of these private language schools will prefer to conduct face-to-face interviews in Italy, or hire readily available English teachers locally, however due to a high turnover of foreign English teachers, there is always a high demand for new staff. Wages are usually good, and work hours range from 20 – 25hrs per week, allowing you lots of free time and flexibility, but they are often ‘after-hours’ and on weekends. Start dates are typically between in September and October each year, but also schools are also known to recruit in January.

Teaching English at International Schools

There are many International schools in Italy, some British and some American. Teaching jobs are readily available for native-English teachers with a BA degree at least two years’ experience and an EU passport. If you do not have an EU passport, it is best to apply to these schools from outside of Italy so that they can help you arrange a work visa. Start dates are usually around June / July at the start of each school year.
