Garden School Victoria

Volunteer in Central America

Company Information

Since 2002, Garden School Victoria has worked to offer a high-quality education to every student, regardless of their background or socioeconomic level. We are located in small community in Honduras, surrounded by mountains and a short drive away from one of Honduras' biggest cities. Our school has a supportive and loving community that creates a safe learning environment for our 115 students. Through offering high-quality bilingual education from native and fluent English speakers from all over the world, we hope to help break the cycle of poverty in our community. Many of our students want to learn English to help better the lives of their families in the future, as well as better their communities and their country. We have students with big dreams and we hope to help them achieve those dreams. We offer volunteers the chance to be immersed in the community and actively work to help create brighter futures for our students.

Job Description

We are currently looking for volunteers to teach English in Honduras at Garden School Victoria. If you are able to make a commitment of 3 to 10 months, we encourage you to apply. Our school year runs from February to November. Our volunteers work Monday through Friday from 7am-2.10pm. Our volunteers have at least two free periods throughout the day to lesson plan but are required to be at school the full day. We ask that volunteers come to school prepared to teach and teach to the best of their ability on a daily basis. Besides the regular school schedule, we also have a weekly meeting with volunteers after school on Wednesdays. There are also occasional outside-of-school events or meetings. We are unable to pay for volunteers flights upfront, we do however reimburse volunteers for their flights depending on how long they volunteer with Garden School Victoria. 6 months commitments: 80% of flights costs (max. 700 USD) 10 months commitments: 100% of flights costs (max. 1000 USD)

Benefits

We offer housing in a shared volunteer house, food, transportation to and from the airport, and a monthly stipend of $80 USD as well as a weekly stipend of $25 USD for food. We also cover any costs associated with a visa extension and any medical expenses incurred while in Honduras. Volunteers receive teacher training and run their own classroom (which is perfect for people who are thinking about going into teaching in the future and want the experience!). There is in-classroom support as needed and we provide any teaching supplies necessary. A volunteer can also receive Spanish classes if they are interested

Requirements

We do not require prior teaching experience or Spanish language skills. Instead, we are looking for people who have a passion for helping, love working with kids, and a willingness to work hard to benefit their students. We find that some of our best teachers are those that, even without experience, really care about the students and put in the effort to become great teachers.
